New Illinois Light Pollution Legislation Moving Forward
Dark Sky champion, Illinois State Senator Laura Ellman, has submitted a new bill - intended to reduce light pollution and save energy across the state. A press release from her office describes the motivation and goals of the legislation,
“Light pollution is more than just an inconvenience: it impacts our health, disrupts wildlife and wastes energy,” said Ellman (D-Naperville). “This legislation ensures Illinois is using smarter, more efficient lighting that protects both our environment and taxpayers.”
Senator Ellman has demonstrated her commitment to protecting the nights of Illinois by submitting and championing the Responsible Outdoor Lighting Control Act which was passed into law in 2024. This state-wide law says that all new Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) lighting must comply with sensible limits on brightness, trespass onto ecologically sensitive or private property, color temperature and shielding.
Expanding on that success, this new bill intends to reduce excessive light at night as well as energy savings by incorporating industry lighting standards into the Illinois Stretch Energy Code for government buildings and properties. What this means, if passed, is that all Illinois state buildings and lighting projects will have to conform to the responsible lighting practices outlined in nationally accepted standards. It can be a win-win for Illinois and our nights!
